We practice the Iwama 20 jo suburi and 7 ken suburi for an hour, then spend an hour working on the 18 pattern jo/ken katas developed by Gaku Homma Sensei.
I plan to keep this page updated with the next practice, and will usually map out the month on our calendar.
Date: 2012-6-24 (Calendar Link)
Time: 10:00 to Noon
Place: Commons Park, Downtown Denver (map)
This week: Kata #2
- "Jo Hi" (火) vs "Ken Kaze" (風) - jo/bokken
- "Jo Hi" (火) vs "Jim Sui" (水) - jo/jo
- "Chuck Tsuchi" (土) vs "Jim Sui" (水) - bokken/jo
- "Chuck Tsuchi" (土) vs "Ken Kaze" (風) - bokken/bokken
Students who trained at Nippon Kan in the past used the names: "Jo, Jim, Ken, and Chuck", while others started with Andrew-Sensei where we use the element names: "Hi, Sui, Kaze, Tsuchi." Practice was getting a little confusing while I tried to keep mentioning both names. One person suggested that the element names could be their last names, so now we have "Jo Hi, Ken Kaze, etc..."
